What Can You Order At A Chinese Restaurant If You’re A Vegetarian?

It can be challenging to eat out if you are a vegetarian. Many restaurants are not designed to cater to special dietary needs; but, this doesn't mean that vegetarians can't find anything to eat at all.  If you go to a Chinese restaurant, it's not likely that they will have a separate section dedicated to vegetarian foods, but they will have many dishes that are perfectly acceptable for non-meat eaters.

Here are some of vegetarian options you can find at most Chinese restaurants.

Vegetable Fried Rice

Fried rice is a very popular Chinese dish. Oftentimes it is served with beef or pork, but there is also usually a vegetable version. This dish is made using sauteed vegetables including peppers, peas, water chestnuts, sprouts, and so on. The rice is fried in sesame oil and the sauteed vegetables are usually added near the end of the cooking preparation.

Hot And Sour Soup

This is a classic dish that is on almost every menu. It is made hot using peppers and is made sour using vinegar. Some of the other ingredients include mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and sometimes tofu. A word of warning: some restaurants use chicken stock or pork stock. So, you should check with the restaurant and see if they use veggie stock in the preparation.

General Tso's Tofu

This is a vegetarian version of the famous General Tso's chicken. The chicken is replaced with tofu. This is an excellent choice for people who want a protein-based dish. Unlike many vegetarian choices that are heavy on pasta or rice, this meal has lots of protein. Tofu is very filling, has lots of protein, and also tastes great.

Vegetable Dumplings

You have the option of getting the dumplings either fried or steamed. The dumplings will come with a ginger dipping sauce. The dumplings tend to be filled with a cabbage-based mixture.

Eggplant And Garlic Sauce

This is a spicy dish that is served with white rice. The eggplant is sauteed in a sweet garlic sauce. The eggplant is not coated in breadcrumbs, so it soaks up the flavor of the oil and becomes very soft.

Peanut and Sesame Noodles

This is a great dish that is often served cold. Noodles are sauteed in sesame oil. The recipe will often include red peppers, crushed ginger, green onions, and of course, peanuts. This is another great dish for people who are looking for protein. The peanuts provide a good source of protein.
